CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Chadwick rolled his eyes. “You’re in my office with your deputy boyfriend and that mangy cat asking about a man whose death the whole town is buzzing about. And you know I was at his house yesterday, so I can safely assume you’ve spoken with that wife of his so you know how he died.”

“Yes, I know how he died,” I said. “So why are you asking if he was shot or beaten to death?”

“Because I want to know how he was killed. What, are you the only person allowed to be curious? Why are you asking about George anyway? What’s it to you that I had a meeting with him?” He looked back over at Bobby and blinked, as if just realizing something. “And what’s with the plainclothes? Is this some other terrible change you’re implementing for Yesteryear?”

“What changes have I implemented? I’m keeping everything as Della wanted it.”

“Did she want the family name smeared?”

“If your grandmother didn’t want to go to prison, she shouldn’t have killed her sister,” I growled, “and yes, Della wanted the family name smeared if it meant putting away the person who killed her. That was her last request, remember?”

“Why do you think George would have been shot or beaten to death?” Bobby asked, folding his arms over his chest. With his size and deeper voice, he commanded answers a lot better than I did, and thankfully, he got us back on topic because Chadwick and I were quickly devolving into an unproductive argument.

“Because that’s usually how one gets killed when they don’t pay back—” Chadwick frowned, looked between us, and lost his attitude. “Wait. How did he get killed?”

“Interesting you’d say he was killed when all I said was he died,” I said. In a small town it was entirely possible for information to leak and rumors to run rampant, but even for Yesteryear, it was a little too soon for rumors of murder if Karen wasn’t speaking to anyone but us. “Why did you assume his death was a murder?”

“And such a specific murder?” Bobby added, nailing Chadwick to his seat with his hard stare.

“That’s not what happened?”

“Why do you think he was murdered, and why in one of those two ways?” Bobby asked as he leaned forward, placing both palms on Chadwick’s desk. His voice was hard enough my knees felt a little liquidy too, so I wasn’t surprised at all to hear Chadwick’s audible gulp.

“The guy owed people money, all right? I did his accounting, so I know.”

“What people?” I asked, dropping into one of the chairs in front of his desk. I let Elvis Purrsley loose to sniff around, and he didn’t waste any time putting his nose to work.

“People who could easily hurt me if I told you.”

“We can easily hurt you if you don’t tell us,” Bobby said.

“That’s police brutality,” Chadwick shot back.

“Not if I just stand guard and look in the other direction while Gracie and the cat slap you around. Answer the question.”

I had to bite my bottom lip to keep from laughing at the image Bobby’s taunt had put in my head.
